A Cruel Forced Experiment

In West Virginia—a hotspot of the US opioid crisis—the Quick Response Team was born of a ‘day of reckoning’ in the city of Huntington, WV: On August 15, 2016, 28 people overdosed in 4 hours.

The ultimate mission: Track down those who’ve overdosed, and either get them treatment, or help them survive until they’re ready for it.

2 years in, the program was hailed a national success story.

Then came the pandemic, forcing a cruel experiment in what happens when interpersonal treatment services are yanked away.

In Cabell County, which includes Huntington, 2020 EMS calls for overdoses rose 14% over the year before.
