‘Vaccine Hawks’ and Broken Cold Chains in Nigeria

Last October, residents in 2 Nigerian states reported deaths from a “strange disease.”

Yellow fever had previously spared Enugu and Delta states so some residents blamed spiritual causes for the deaths.

After the Nigeria CDC confirmed yellow fever and launched a vaccination campaign, some residents refused the jab.
Another challenge: Public health centers lack equipment—and even electricity—necessary for cold storage of doses to meet communities’ needs.
Scarcity and need bred ideal conditions for sketchy vaccine deals where citizens pay for a jab from “vaccine hawks.”

A 2-part Premium Times investigation reveals these growing challenges as yellow fever again becomes endemic in Nigeria.
