Highly Vaccinated but That’s not Enough

The most vaccinated nation on earth is suffering a worrisome surge in COVID-19 cases, The Washington Post reports.

Although more than 60% of the population is completely vaccinated, the Seychelles is bringing back restrictions, according to the BBC.

The kicker: A third of the active cases involved people fully vaccinated.

The tourism-dependent nation deployed Sinopharm and AstraZeneca vaccines early this year with an ambitious goal reaching herd immunity.

Since the vaccines aren’t as effective as the Pfizer and Moderna products, epidemiologist Jennifer Huang Bouey told the Post the cases shouldn’t be a surprise. She estimates less than half of the population “could be assumed to have immunity conferred by vaccines.”

Given that, Huang Bouey stressed: “Quarantine, mask-wearing and crowd-avoiding should be part of the public health strategy.”
