Uganda’s 1%

The COVAX facility aimed to get ahead of glaring vaccine inequity by setting up the largest vaccine procurement in history.
But the effort has fallen far behind its targets, in part because of export controls imposed by India.
Uganda has only received enough doses to vaccinate less than 1% of its population.
For Ugandans lucky enough to be vaccinated: “This is gold to us,” said physician Yayi Alfred.
But these yawning gaps up the chance of the virus spreading and mutating, warned Uganda’s health minister Jane Ruth Aceng.
“If any country thinks after vaccinating its population they are safe, it is a lie,” she said.
