Where Oxygen Is a Luxury Good

India’s tragic shortages of medical oxygen are shared by many lower-resource countries. Producing, safely storing, and transporting the lifesaving elixir is difficult.

Data point: Across Africa, oxygen is 5X costlier than in Europe.
A Solution? David Fairen-Jimenez’s team at the University of Cambridge has developed a more affordable method to convert air into oxygen. They soon hope to launch their prototype, which uses sponge-like materials to store and separate gases.
They’ve also created the Oxygen and Ventilator System Initiative to improve access in LMICs—an effort they hope will outlive the pandemic and support treatments for childhood pneumonia and chronic pulmonary diseases, too.
