Bad Influencers

A documentary released in March by Robert F. Kennedy Jr—the prolific anti-vaxxer and one of the “disinformation dozen”—uses slick production values and misinterpreted science in an effort to stir up vaccine mistrust specifically among Black Americans, NPR reports.  
 
Linking real travesties like the Tuskegee syphilis study to vaccine suspicions, the film paints its agenda as “heroically engaged in a new civil rights campaign.”
 
Kennedy is not alone. Misinformation influencers are making a hefty profit selling supposed alternatives to mainstream medicine: essential oils, dietary supplements, and special training, the Center for Public Integrity reports.
 
Example: Ty and Charlene Bollinger have raked in tens of millions of dollars questioning cancer treatments and now COVID-19 vaccines. It’s a hard train to stop when, as Ty Bollinger says: “We’ve reached millions, but we want to reach billions.”
