Epicenter of Opioid Deaths

The pandemic has indisputably backpedaled progress against America’s addiction crisis. In Massachusetts, Black men are being hit particularly hard.

Startling statistic: While whites saw a modest decline in opioid deaths, deaths among non-Hispanic Black males climbed from 32.6 deaths per 100,000 in 2019, to 55.1 in 2020.

Decades-old disconnect: While Black communities in Massachusetts were ravaged by drugs starting in the 1960s, the response was to criminalize. When opioid use “exploded” among white suburbanites, authorities saw them as people with addiction issues who deserve empathy and treatment only began.
