‘Wow’ Moment for Wolbachia

Dengue cases were slashed 77% in a new trial infecting mozzies with the “miraculous” Wolbachia bacteria that hinders the virus’s progression.
Conducted in Indonesia, the New England Journal of Medicine study also clocked an 86% reduction in people needing hospital care after the engineered insects were released.
“This result is groundbreaking,” said study author Katie Anders, of the World Mosquito Program. “We think it can have an even greater impact when it is deployed at scale in large cities around the world, where dengue is a huge public health problem.”
