A Plan Falls Short, Way Short

0: The number of goals achieved by an ambitious 5-year global strategy to stem the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

In 2015, UNAIDS, UNICEF, and WHO set targets for stemming the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2020.

A July 21 final report on the campaign called “Start Free, Stay Free, AIDS Free” revealed dramatic shortcomings:

  • 40,000 - Target number of children newly infected with HIV in 2020
  • 150,000 - Number in 2020

  • 100,000 - Target number of adolescents and young women newly infected with HIV by 2020
  • 260,000 - Number by 2020.

What happened? COVID-19 disruptions, yes. But identifying those who need treatment is difficult and getting governments to do more are perennial challenges.
