Risking Their Lives—Only To Be Demonized

When the pandemic hit hard in the Appalachian highlands, health workers at Johnston Memorial Hospital were lionized by some. 

But as COVID-19 spread in the community, so did conspiracy theories that mobile morgues were stage props; nurses were profiting from COVID-19 diagnoses; and coronavirus patients only had the flu.
While the PTSD of COVID-19 health workers has been likened to that of war veterans, in communities rife with COVID-19 denialism,“It is like having fought in a war that many believe never took place.”
