Starting At the Source?

In hopes of stopping the next pandemic, a visionary researcher wants to go straight to the likely source by tweaking horseshoe bats’ DNA to block coronavirus infections.
While the nascent “gene drive” technology has been used in mosquitoes and mice, detractors say deploying the method in wildly diverse bat communities is a different story. And are bats even the right focus?
“We need to be thinking about changing the unhealthy relationship of humans and nature, not to gene drive a wild animal so that we can continue our irresponsible and unsustainable behavior …,” argues Natalie Kofler, founder of Editing Nature.
