A ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ Attitude to PPE

The environment is bearing a heavy burden of collateral damage from the pandemic—in the form of PPE waste.

~129 billion disposable masks and 65 billion disposable gloves have been used every month during the pandemic, research shows.

Entrepreneurs are seeking solutions to this disconnect between the medical necessity and environmental sustainability.

2 solutions:

  • Turning masks into bricks in India
  • Creating washable PPE in Mexico

“Most of my family are doctors and nurses. They think, ok, I'm saving humans, but I'm not saving the planet,” said Tamara Chayo, who developed QR-code tracked PPE that can be washed and reused 50 times. Often doctors use 4 disposable gowns per day.
