When Hospitals Go Dark

Power outages are a pain at the best of times—when they occur in hospitals, they can be deadly and costly.

Now, they are a top concern for South Africa’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

The issue has “varied and far-reaching consequences,” from losing power in surgical theater, electrical equipment not working, and medicines and COVID-19 vaccines spoiling.

Ideally, a loss of power would barely be noticeable thanks to uninterruptible power supplies that kick in and then hand off to a backup generator.

In some areas, however, a lack of back-up power maintenance has been one of the biggest obstacles to a rapid rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.
