Return to the ICEE Age

If it weren’t for a mechanical failure at a Kansas Dairy Queen in 1958, the iconic ICEE may never have been.

Luckily, enterprising DQ employee Omar Knedlik knew an accidental million dollar idea when he saw it, and soon his slushy frozen sodas were a hit.

Then came the first ICEE machine, with the help of an old ice cream machine and a car AC unit.

Of course, the ICEE is a public health no-go: Each 12 ounce drink with 150 grams of sugar.

It made 15th place in the Men’s Health “Worst Drinks on the Planet,” according to Men’s Health—which specifically threw shade on the beloved blue raspberry flavor.

Now that’s cold.
