A Year On: The Miracle Birth Amid the Beirut Blast

On the evening of August 4, 2020, a blast ripped through Beirut, killing at least 214 people—22 of them at St. George Hospital, one of the country’s oldest medical centers.

The trauma of that day still lingers for those who survived.

Emmanuelle Khnaisser was giving birth as the explosion hit. She continued her delivery by cell phone flashlight, surrounded by injured relatives and distraught strangers searching for loved ones.

On video, her husband captured both the horror of the disaster and the joy of new life. This week, they are grateful to celebrate the first birthday of their son, George.

Others weren’t so lucky.
