Under mounting pressure to do more to end the pandemic, the White House made fresh commitments in a virtual summit yesterday and implored other world leaders to join an “all hands on deck” effort, Reuters reports.

Biden’s pledge: Criticized for hoarding the global vaccine supply, President Biden committed half a billion more COVID-19 vaccine doses to other countries, and another $750 million for vaccine distribution.

Harris’ call: Vice President Kamala Harris implored countries and companies to create a $10 billion global health fund to ready the world for future pandemics—and committed $250 million to the cause, The Hill reports.

Raising eyebrows: On the same day, the US greenlit COVID-19 boosters for over-65s and other high-risk groups—yet just 300 million of America’s total of 1.1 billion donated doses are expected to be shipped this year, The New York Times reports.

Teaming up: Biden also announced a partnership with the European Union aimed at vaccinating 70% of the global population by next September, The New York Times also reports.

Too little, too late? But while it may sound ambitious, this goal should be reached much sooner, and like all of Biden’s summit targets, falls “terribly short of the ambition that’s needed to stop this global pandemic,” writes Brook K. Baker, a Northeastern University law professor, in a STAT op-ed.
