COVID-19 Origins? To the Bat Cave!

Possible ancestors of SARS-CoV-2 have been found in 3 coronaviruses in horseshoe bats that inhabit limestone caves in northern Laos, according to a not-yet-peer-reviewed article by Laotian and French researchers.
Scientists from Institut Pasteur and the National University of Laos found a close similarity between the part of the SARS-CoV-2 genome responsible for enabling the virus to infect cells and that of coronaviruses found in the bats.
“These viruses may have contributed to SARS-CoV-2’s origin and may intrinsically pose a future risk of direct transmission to humans,” the authors said.
The findings may offer pushback to theories that COVID-19 originated because of genetic manipulation by scientists.
