Health Equity Tourism Takes Off

Amid a new gold rush of health equity research funding, an influx of newcomers to the field are publishing “naive and uninformed, and sometimes racist, research and ‘erasing’ scholars of color” who built the discipline’s foundation.

A STAT investigation singles out JAMA as a main offender. One example: None of the 5 papers in the journal’s special issue on racial and ethnic health disparities featured a Black lead or corresponding author. Moreover, 1 of the papers published results similar to 1 submitted by Black researchers submitted 3 years earlier (ultimately published by PLOS ONE).

“I had sent it to JAMA first. They had no interest,” said 1 of that study’s authors, Elle Lett, a Black and trans statistical epidemiologist at the University of Pennsylvania.
