HIV’s Lessons for Covid-19 Vaccines

Men make up just 40% of those vaccinated against COVID-19 in South Africa—yet there is no evidence that vaccine hesitancy is more common among South African men.
Attitudes toward HIV testing may offer some insight into how ideas of masculinity play into vaccine avoidance.
Research shows that men are less likely to get tested for HIV and less likely to access treatment, and that many men see South Africa’s health system as “a space for women.”
One possible solution, also gleaned from HIV research: Decentralize vaccine drives, create more accessible hours, and build supportive campaigns that “emphasise how a vaccination protects an individual’s health and their family’s health.”
