India Battles Nipah Outbreak

India’s Kerala state is on high alert amid an outbreak of the Nipah virus that killed a 12-year-old boy over the weekend and infected health workers, Hindustan Times reports.
Contact tracing efforts have revealed additional infections, according to CBS News.
The virus, carried by fruit bats, can trigger symptoms similar to COVID-19 but is far more deadly, killing 75% of those infected, according to the WHO—compared to 2% for the pandemic coronavirus. Some 20% of survivors experience persistent neurological symptoms like seizures and personality changes.
Since being discovered in 1999, multiple outbreaks across South and Southeast Asia have killed 260+ people.
