John Nkengasong Tapped to Head PEPFAR

The Biden administration is expected to nominate John Nkengasong, director of the Africa CDC, to lead the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in the coming days.

Nkengasong, a Cameroon-born virologist, would be the first person of African origin to head the US Department of State program, responsible for funding and goal-setting for AIDS care in mostly African countries.

Some hailed the decision as “unexpected but inspired” after the White House had faced sharp criticism for leaving the program without a leader since Deborah Birx’s February 2020 departure.

The only downside: Nkengasong will be missed in the fight against other infectious diseases in Africa: “It’s a loss for Africa C.D.C.,” says Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves.
