Super-Immune Powers

A slice of good news: Some people appear to have “superhuman immunity” to SARS-CoV-2 and possibly future variants, according to a spate of new studies.
Who are these super-immune individuals? All were previously infected with the coronavirus and also immunized with an mRNA vaccine.
One recent preprint study found that these people were able to neutralize 6 variants of concern including Delta, Beta, and several other relatives of SARS-CoV-2—including its predecessor SARS-CoV-1, which emerged 20 years ago.
It’s uncertain whether all previously infected and vaccinated individuals would achieve this remarkable immunity, but the findings suggest a third shot will help antibodies evolve even further.
These insights offer hope for the idea of a pancoronavirus vaccine—but there’s a catch: “You first need to be sick with COVID-19.”
