Borders Around Abortion

For Texans, accessing an abortion is hard enough under S.B.8, the nation’s most restrictive abortion law, which bans abortions after 6 weeks.
For the undocumented in the Rio Grande Valley, the barriers are even greater.
The area, an “abortion clinic desert” is also riddled with internal immigration checkpoints, meaning undocumented pregnant people seeking abortions could instead end up detained. Procedures costing up to $1,500 and language barriers are also “constant deterrents.”
While advocates have rallied to help Texans seeking abortions to get care elsewhere, “Undocumented folks are being left out of the conversation,” said Anna Rupani of Fund Texas Choice.
