Puerto Rico’s Advantage

Puerto Rico leads the US in COVID-19 immunizations with more than 73% of the population fully vaccinated. The US territory also has one of the country’s lowest community transmission rates.

All while still recovering from Hurricane Maria, and with a poverty rate of 43.5% compared to 11.4% on the US mainland.

These challenges seem to have espoused a duty of care to Puerto Rico’s fragile health system; people and businesses have embraced tough restrictions and vaccines.

Plus: “… when resources are distributed equitably AND when local scientists and health care leaders are able to direct their own strategies, they can perform better than most US jurisdictions,” says Daniel Colón-Ramos, a COVID-19 scientific adviser to Puerto Rico.
