A Ventilator for the COVID Era—And Beyond

Another COVID-era innovation that may outlast the pandemic: a low-cost ventilator that could help fight other deadly respiratory diseases in low- and middle-income countries.
ICU ventilators are expensive and complex to maintain, making them scarce in low-resource settings.
But in a new paper, Imperial College London researchers show that the simple, low-cost “RELAVENT” design—originally developed for short-term use in response to the pandemic—meets international standards for critical care ventilators. It performs equally well with a home-use oxygen concentrator as with pressurized gas supplies used in hospitals.
Next step: Secure funding to build an advanced prototype that can secure regulatory approval.
