Broken promises in Uganda

All the talk of global solidarity in the face of COVID-19 rings hollow.

International medical partners who evacuated left Ugandans under-equipped and alone, according to a trio of Ugandan researchers from Mbarara University of Science and Technology and Makere University.

Calling out partners for trying to help Uganda’s health institutions from “a safe distance,” they ask for more equitable, boots-on-the-ground commitments from allies.

The Quote: “Even facing a threat as existential as Covid-19, many Ugandan experts have not felt empowered to protest the ways in which they have felt abandoned and instead have remained silent as international partners try to ‘fix’ our public health systems over email.”
