Ivermectin: Unproven and in High Demand

In the absence of vaccines and in the throes of a vicious second wave of COVID-19 in January, desperate South Africans turned to an unproven drug: ivermectin.
The antiparasitic drug has been used by millions of people around the world trying to prevent and treat COVID-19—a virus.
By the time research emerged that ivermectin had “little to no effect” against COVID-19, the drug’s popularity was off and running.
Animal version: Demand for the cheaper animal version of the drug—which has never been tested in humans—skyrocketed in South Africa, suggesting people may be self-medicating with concentrations large enough for a cow or a horse.
