Protein Power

Some people prone to acute immune system reactions or other health issues have been reluctant to get COVID-19 vaccines, fearing rare but potentially serious side effects.
They may soon have a new option: vaccines made from purified proteins.
How they’re different: Unlike mRNA or viral-vector COVID-19 jabs, these vaccines deliver proteins juiced with immunity-stimulating adjuvants.

Encouraging data: Good protection and fewer side effects.
The US biotech firm Novavax’s vaccine recently received an emergency use authorization in Indonesia. An application to US regulators is expected before 2022.
Others: China’s Clover Biopharmaceuticals and India’s Biological E are also likely to advance applications for their vaccines in various countries soon.
