How COVID-19 Hits Some Children Harder

2 studies published yesterday give some insights into understanding what factors make some children more at risk for severe COVID-19, and how the virus can affect children’s gastrointestinal systems. 

  • A study in Nature conducted by UK researchers found that odds of PICU admission were higher among children with underlying medical conditions. They also highlighted disparities: Hospitalizations were most common among boys, Black, Asian, mixed-race children, and children from underserved neighborhoods.
  • Italian researchers reported in a JAMA study that 10% of 685 pediatric COVID-19 cases had severe GI involvement—which was linked to higher odds of hospitalization and ICU admission.
