‘Proving’ Virginity in Egypt

For brides in more conservative areas of Egypt, proving their virginity is critical. A torn hymen can lead to shaming by relatives or even motivate so-called honor killings.

That’s why hundreds of women in Egypt have been turning to hymen reconstruction surgery, surgeons and NGOs in the country say.

The Quote: "This is our duty as doctors - to protect girls from murder and from the social stigma they are subjected to because of the hymen," said a gynecologist, Layla, who used a pseudonym so she could speak freely about her work.
