SARS-CoV-2 Directly Targets Fat Tissue

Since the start of the pandemic, researchers have tried to understand why people who are overweight and obese have been especially vulnerable to COVID-19’s most severe effects.

They now have new clues. A recent preprint study found that the coronavirus infects fat cells directly, along with certain immune cells within body fat—triggering a destructive and widespread bodily response.

The Quote: “This paper is another wake-up call for the medical profession and public health to look more deeply into the issues of overweight and obese individuals, and the treatments and vaccines we’re giving them,” said Barry Popkin, a professor of nutrition at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
