Child Grooms: Overlooked and at Risk

While child marriage disproportionally impacts girls, the plight of child grooms is often overlooked. 

In Nepal—which has one of the highest rates of marriages involving a child groom at 1 in 10—men who married as children describe mental health struggles and deep grief over lost childhoods. 

115 million boys and men have been affected by child marriage, a 2019 UNICEF analysis found. The pandemic threatens to make matters worse.

The Quote: "Young men force themselves to be adults, but they don't have the psychological resources to cope with all the demands. There is more isolation, alienation and a lot of psychological pain within themselves,” said Pashupati Mahat, a senior clinical psychologist in Nepal.
