Puerto Rico has been a model for handling Covid-19 in the US with a 78% vaccination rate and one of the lowest death rates.
But Omicron has driven a nearly 600% surge in hospitalizations, inundating its overtaxed health system.
Factors in play:
- Vaccinated people are lowering their guard. People are tired and consider Omicron “mild.”
- Most people in Puerto Rico haven’t received a booster shot, allowing Omicron to spread more easily.
- Holiday gatherings, which in Puerto Rico last into January, worsened transmission.
