Quiet at WHO's New Pandemic Center

Months after WHO cut the ribbon on its new pandemic-prevention hub in Berlin, the center is still barely operational, Foreign Policy reports.

The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence sits largely empty as its employees—mostly contractors—currently work from elsewhere in the world.

The center is supposed to harness new technologies like AI and quantum computing, but it’s still unclear what is actually being implemented.

The center has also leaned towards hiring “very technical, very epidemiological” scientists, and lacks social scientists who will be critical to the center’s mission, some partners say.

Meanwhile, WHO’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus looks guaranteed for reelection: he’s the only candidate in the race. Experts tell Nature this is a vote of confidence in Tedros, but also a matter of practicality: “Generally, you don’t want to change leadership in a war,” one think-tank director puts it.
