Manual garbage dumping is common in Bangladesh despite the dangers to human health. Many children have no other choice but to search landfills for food. Halishahar, Chattogram, Aug. 27, 2019. Image: Shahriar Farzana.

Pictures of Public Health in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s Second Public Health Photo Contest winners reveal stark public health challenges—from food insecurity, to the lack of housing options in megacities like Dhaka, to the scarcity of safe drinking water. They also illuminate—in vivid, vibrant detail—photography’s potential to raise awareness and advocate for solutions.

GHN is pleased to present a selection of the 2019 winners. The contest, a collaborative effort of 30 local, national, and international organizations, was hosted by Gonoshasthaya Kendra and Gono Bishwabidyalay in Bangladesh and convened by Md Zohirul Alam, MBBS, MPH, a physician and alumnus of Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
